Horse slaughter is just about one of the most disgusting things that up until recently was taking place in the United States. Luckily, through much effort by the Humane Society of the United States and several other groups, it was stopped here in the US. However, some unscrupulous bastards are still sending their horses over the border into Canada and Mexico where they can legally be slaughtered for horsemeat. Slaughterhouses aren't exactly humane places for the animals, but the horses going to Mexico are treated particularly heinously, considering that there are no animal welfare standards in Mexico that the slaughterhouse employees have to follow.
